Thursday 15th March 2012

Yet another white winged gull has appeared in the form of a third-winter Glaucous Gull that has spent the entire morning just inside the dock compound in from the bus stop. Other migrants a bit thin on the ground this morning but included 80 Starlings, 3 Redwings & singles of Golden Plover, Jackdaw, Song Thrush & Reed Bunting.

Wednesday 14th March 2012

A small arrival of new Goldcrests, Robins, Redwings & singles of Chiffchaff, Fieldfare & Blacky. The Firecrest from a couple of days ago is still with us as is a 2nd winter Yellow-legged Gull. Apart from these records it's a bit desperate with the mass of gulls feeding about 5 miles offshore not coming any closer for scrutiny. 2 Red-throated Divers & 2 Wigeon went north with 6 Common Scoter & an Oyk south. The first-winter Iceland Gull put in an appearance mid-day having followed a ship in from way out.

Tuesday 13th March 2012

First-winter Iceland Gull with us all morning is probably the same bird as yesterday that was incorrectly aged in the fog as a second-winter - oops ! A small arrival of new Blackies, Great Tits, Robins & singles of Dunnock & Goldcrest present on site this morning. Most of yesterdays Goldcrests plus the Firecrest are still with us but no sign of any Chiffchaffs. Flat calm morning with at least 30 Red-throated Divers in the distance offshore coming and going plus assorted seals, including mum + pup, on distant sandbars at low tide. The moth trap produced another Lead-coloured Drab.

Monday 12th March 2012

Crystal clear first thing then the fog appeared 0630hrs onwards. Decent arrival of typical mid-March migrants including at least 12 Goldcrests, 5 Chiffchaffs 2 Siskins, Fieldfare & a Firecrest. A second winter Iceland Gull came off the beach out of the fog & into the dock complex - three different Iceland Gulls over the last few weeks is unprecedented. 3 Canada Geese went south just off the beach & the 2 Snow Buntings flew over the obs onto the aggregate yard beach late morning. Peregrine chaos over the reserve at mid-day. An immature male, which is probably the bird seen ten days ago (it has some primary feathers missing), was been given the "bums rush" by the local adult male when a third male appeared to join in the fracas for good measures - mayhem !

Sunday 11th March 2012

Migrants today include 45 Wood Pigeons, Rook & Yellowhammer all going south & a confused Siskin going south then back north. In the bushes a handful of new Blackies plus singles of Dunnock, Long-tailed Tit & Woodcock. Two Lead-coloured Drabs were good for us as this species is only noted infrequently here.

Saturday 10th March 2012

Female Marsh Harrier went south early morning. Also going south 6 Crows, 4 Mipits, 2 Jackdaws & a Goldfinch. Moving through the bushes new in were a couple of Great Tits & a Chaffinch. 3 Yellow-legged Gulls were noted with the loafing gulls just inside the dock complex this morning. 2 Snow Buntings are still with us. Signs of spring are the appearance of Frogs in the Butts pond doing what Frogs do !
