The third site record of Red-flanked Bluetail was most unexpected. Other migrants were 50 Redwing, 8 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Mipit, 2 Firecrest, 2 Jackdaw, 2 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Wheatear, Black Redstart, Brambling, Fieldfare, Reed Bunting, Siskin, Woodcock plus a couple of new Blackies & Robins.


Turnip was unseasonal as they don't normally appear until May.

23 birds ringed: 8 Redwing, 5 Goldcrest, 3 Blackbird, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Firecrest, 1 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Red-flanked Bluetail, 1 Robin, 1 Song Thrush.

Friday 22nd March 2019


Migrants this morning included 6 Chiffchaff, 4 Mipit, 3 Wheatear, 2 Chaffinch, 2 Redwing, Fieldfare, Firecrest,  Rock Pipit, Woodcock & the first Black Redstart of the spring. Also on site 3 Turnstone & Purp. Offshore southbound 12 Red-throated Diver, 2 Great-crested Grebe, 2 Teal, Canada Goose, Great-Northern Diver & Shelduck plus 4 Kitts and 3 Gannet following ships.


Early Thorn appeared for the first time this year.

Ringing: 4 Chiffchaff, 2 Chaffinch, 1 Robin.

Thursday 21st March 2019


A roosting flock of 35 Sanderling & 15 Dunlin plus the Purp thrown in for good measure at the point on the rising tide was a "Brucie bonus" and the largest flock of Sanderling on site in a long long time. On site 28 Redwing first thing plus 5 Wheatear, 4 Firecrest, 3 Chiffchaff, Fieldfare, Goldcrest, Mipit & Sparrowhawk. On the move southwards 7 Chaffinch, Greylag Goose & Siskin with northwards 29 Wood Pigeon & 2 Jackdaw plus 2 Mipit in off the sea. Offshore quiet apart from 25 Common Scoter south and a Bonxie slowly ambling past.

Ringing: 5 Redwing, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Firecrest, 1 Blue Tit, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Wood Pigeon.

Wednesday 20th March 2019


Southbound 25 Wood Pigeon, 12 Chaffinch, 8 Carrion Crow, 4 Mipit, 3 Rook & Goldfinch with northbound 8 Barnacles & 3 Greylag. Offshore 15 Dunlin & 2 Brent went south plus a couple of Gannet following a ship. On site 10 Chiffchaff, 5 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Wheatear, 3 Firecrest, 3 Turnstone, 2 Goldcrest, Fieldfare, Purple Sand, Redwing, Reed Bunting, Stock Dove & Woodcock.

12 birds ringed: 5 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackbird, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Great Tit, 1 Dunnock.

Tuesday 19th March 2019

Half a dozen of both Chiffchaff & Firecrest on site with others worth a mention including 2 Wheatear, Redwing & Sparrowhawk.  On the move southwards 4 Carrion Crow, 2 Goldfinch, 2 Mipit & Curlew. Several Greylag flying about early on as they wander in search of new places to infest. Offshore movements - yawn !


Quieter conditions so Diurnea fagella has put in an appearance.

Ringing: 4 Chiffchaff, 4 Firecrest, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Sparrowhawk.

Monday 18th March 2019


The first 2 Wheatear of the year always makes one feel better, especially as the wind has dropped. Also on site 4 Mipit, 4 Redwing, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Firecrest & 2 Turnstone. On the move southwards 37 Wood Pigeon, 11 Carrion Crow, Grey Wagtail & Stock Dove. Offshore quiet.

Ringing: 3 Redwing, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Robin.

Sunday 17th March 2019


Handful of migrants on the move with at least 21 Mipit coming in off the sea plus southbound 7 Goldfinch, 5 Mipit, 4 Carrion Crow, 3 Jackdaw, 3 Rook, 2 Greylag Goose, 2 Mipit & Chaffinch. On site 2 Chiffchaff, Firecrest, Reed Bunting & the first White Wag of the year. Single Dunlin & Sanderling were on the beach near high tide plus 2 Turnstone on the jetty. Offshore quiet except for a Bonxie that came into the river-mouth to harass gulls & a Great-northern Diver that landed off the point.


Still few moths due to wind and temperature but Green Cellar Slug was found.

Ringing: 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackbird, 1 Dunnock, 1 Great Tit.
