Saturday 21st January 2023

Little Egret investigating the cottage pond in the afternoon.

1,013 Cormorant headed out fishing late on parade coming from over Harwich suggesting that they had roosted overnight somewhere like Abberton Reservoir or Alton Water? An additional 192 came in from the north. Offshore southbound 11 Common Scoter, 3 Brent & Red-throated Diver with northbound 4 Red-throats in roughly 1.5 hrs observation. 4 Collared Dove & a Chaffinch paid a visit had probably not come from far away.

Friday 20th January 2023

Clear sunny breezy frosty morning. Very little to report. Single Turnstone on the river bank & single Linnet on the Butts.

Thursday 19th January 2023

Clear frosty morning. Only thing slightly different was the first Collared Dove since November 12th last year. Up until a couple of year's back we had a healthy population that would have even been sitting on eggs or feeding young at this time of the year but numbers have plummeted. One gets the impression that the decline is not just here but across Felixstowe but very few people keep accurate records of this ubiquitous species. 7 Med Gull in the harbour is highest count for a while.

Ringing Recoveries

Chiffchaff ringed LBO 3rd October 2019 retrapped 579 km away at Kervijen, Plomodiern, Finistere, France on 24th October 2019. Probably on autumn migration when trapped at both sites but only took over 3 years for the information to get back to us !

Starling ringed LBO 6th August 2022 was taken by a cat 36 km away at Assington, Suffolk on 7th December 2022.

Lesser Whitethroat ringed as a moulting adult at LBO 17th July 2022 was retrapped 15km away at Hollesley on 15th August 2022 is quite probably a local breeder to us.

Goldcrest ringed Hollesley 21st September 2022 was retrapped 15 km away at LBO 16th October 2022 could have hedge hopped to get here over the three week period on its autumn migration.

Wednesday 18th January 2023

880 Cormorant headed out fishing early on a clear cold frosty morning. Great Crested Grebe on the river only sighting apart from what lives here.

Tuesday 17th January 2023

Glorious sunny frosty morning. 702 Cormorant went fishing. 2 high flying Wood Pigeon heading south is a bit odd for the time of the year. A Snipe came off the reserve early on but apart from that very predictable although good to see 2 Song Thrush by the Butts pond are presumably local breeders that can be very elusive in the winter prior to starting singing & setting up territories.

Monday 16th January 2023

 No coverage.

Sunday 15th January 2023

Another windy morning with the temperature droping several degrees. 690 Cormorant headed out fishing. Offshore a Shelduck went south & a Red-throated Diver north plus 30 Common Gull & 30 Kitts loitering in 1.5 hours sea watching. 5 Meds in the harbour when Stenna Britannica went out. More of a day for admin & maintenance - but had plenty of those day recently!

Saturday 14th January 2023

800 Cormorant headed out fishing early on. Southbound 16 Red-throated Diver, 11 Pintail, Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Scoter, Golden Plover, Oyk & Shelduck with northbound 8 Common Scoter & 2 Red-throats plus 54 Kitts offshore.
