Pleasant calm & overcast. 983 Cormorant went out as it was barely starting to get light so may have missed some. Southbound 9 Barnacle Geese, 8 Brent, 8 Shelduck, 4 Red-throated Diver & 2 Common Scoter with northbound 23 Brent, 8 Shelduck & 2 Red-throats. On site all the regulars including Cetti's, Rock Pipit plus the Linnet have increased to 30. A male Chaffinch was our first sighting of the year which is a sad reflection on the fortunes of this rapidly declining species.
Friday 9th February 2024
Belts of annoying drizzle this morning. Very much "same old same old" at the moment. 1,250 Cormorant went out fishing, Northbound 6 Brent & 2 Common Scoter with southbound 4 Red-throated Diver + 30 Common Scoter sat on the sea. Cetti's & Rock Pipit still present. Roll on spring ! A Firecrest seen in the afternoon is probably overwintering as there have been a couple of very brief sightings of a crest so far this year that has eluded specific identification.
Thursday 8th February 2024
Rain, breezy & not very pleasant. 1,260 Cormorant went out fishing. Handful of Common Scoter & Red-throated Diver went back & forth but, to be honest, it's one of those mornings if one hadn't of bothered it wouldn't have mattered.
Wednesday 7th February 2024
1,446 Cormorant went out fishing. Southbound 18 Red-throated Diver, 11 Shelduck, 6 Brent, Barnacle Goose, Common Scoter & Oyk with northbound 17 Red-throats, 5 Common Scoter & Shelduck + 30 Common Scoter sat on the sea. Cetti's still with us. The evening roost at the north end held at least 100 House Sparrow, 3,500 Starlings plus an adult male Sparrowhawk in attendance for his supper.
Tuesday 6th February 2024
1,610 Cormorant went out fishing. Southbound 20 Brent, 3 Shelduck & Red-throated Diver + 30 Common Scoter on the sea. One Cetti's heard. Blowing a gale by late morning with gusts up to Force 9.
Monday 5th February 2024
1,450 Cormorant headed out fishing, 6 Shelduck flew north, Skylark flew south, Cetti's & Rock Pipit still with us. Good to see Mr. & Mrs. Peregrine put in an appearance as not been seeing much of them recently. 14 Linnet was our highest count of the year so far.
Sunday 4th February 2024
1,480 Cormorant went out early plus an additional 112 came in from the north later on. Southbound 14 Red-throated Diver, 5 Common Scoter, 2 Brent, Oyk, Knot & Shelduck with northbound 5 Red-throats & 3 Common Scoter plus a Shag flew into the river. A Skylark is probably a bird keen to head back to its natal area considering the mild conditions for the time of year.
