Thursday 1st February 2024
1,400 Cormorant went out fishing early. 2 Cetti's still with us as is the Rock Pipit on the river bank. A quesstimated 100+ House Sparrow in the roost at the north end before a mere 2,500 Starlings came in. Almost dark when a Sparrowhawk dived in to grab one for supper.
Wednesday 31st January 2024
Barely daylight at the moment when the Cormorants head out with 1,105 this morning. Southbound 112 Knot, 19 Pintail, 8 Common Scoter, 6 Shelduck, 5 Red-throated Diver, 2 Dunlin & 2 Teal with northbound 18 Red-throats plus 90 Common Scoter sat on the sea to the north of us. No real reason for three flocks of Knot to head south in fairly quick succession at this time of the year although this species is prone to randomly change wintering estuaries for reasons unknown to us but are perfectly logical to them.
Tuesday 30th January 2024
1,113 Cormorant headed out early. Southbound 15 Common Scoter, 7 Brent, 5 Shelduck, 4 Barnacle Geese, 4 Red-throated Diver & 2 Shoveler with northbound 9 Red-throats & 4 Common Scoter plus 40 Scoter sat offshore. Single Stock Dove visited.
Monday 29th January 2024
1,450 Cormorant went out fishing early on, single Cetti's & Rock Pipit on the reserve.
Sunday 28th January 2024
880 Cormorant went out fishing early. 2 Stock Dove again visited. The roost at the north end was a cacophony of noise from an unknown number of House Sparrow before the Starlings arrived. Roughly 6,000 were murmuring around with the roost overflowing from the brambles into the trees at Customs plus lighting towers. Disturbance from ignorant humans plus some dogs delays them settling down for the night although the human presence may well be deterring avian predators from coming in for supper.
