Wednesday 1st January 2025
Dull windy start to the year with rain from late morning onwards. 475 Cormorant went out fishing in the half light. A Merlin south just in front of the observatory was unexpected as we only have a handful of mid-winter records. Southbound 26 Brent, 21 Kitts & 2 Golden Plover with northbound 7 Common Scoter plus 5 Red-breasted Merganser went down river outwards.
Tuesday 31st December 2024
This Black-headed Gull has been wintering in the View Point car park for a dozen years or more. No idea where it goes to breed.
570 Cormorant went out fishing. Southbound 9 Brent, 6 Shelduck, 5 Wigeon, 2 Red-throated Diver, Great Crested Grebe, Marsh Harrier, Teal & Velvet Scoter with northbound 23 Common Scoter plus another 19 sat on the sea. 9 Kitts were with the gulls offshore & in the estuary. Usual Rock Pipit & Turnstone in the usual place. A new Blacky was unexpected as no cold weather to encourage any movement although some individuals are prone to wander in the winter for no apparent reason.
Ringing: 1 Blackbird.

Still damp & misty with visibility better at times. A slightly increasing breeze should hopefully shift it - eventually. 254 Cormorant headed out fishing. Offshore (when it was visible) southbound 4 White-fronted Geese, 3 Wigeon, 2 Gadwal, 2 Shelduck, Curlew & Red-throated Diver with northbound 17 Red-throats. 19 Common Scoter sat offshore, Skylark heard overhead & the wintering Rock Pipit still present & accounted for.
Saturday 28th December 2024
The ongoing grey, murky conditions continue, although it cleared offshore for a brief while to see southbound 2 Mallard, 2 Shoveler, Brent, Goldeneye & Oyk with northbound 6 Common Scoter. 7 Teal & a Common Scoter were sat offshore. 14 Fieldfare & 3 Lapwing on the reserve soon departed as walkers got out, despite the gloom. Rock Pipit & Turnstone on the point.
